The Secret Garden of Mythic Mulholland
Michaela and Graham moved into their townhouse and discovered a previous owner's Mediterranean Garden, complete with a Medusa fountain. They wanted to learn how to care for many of the existing plants, remove harmful invasive species, and blend native and dog friendly grasses where there had been splotchy turf. The practical issues solved, we then planted a fragrant herbal garden that transported them to the ancient world.
Before
This garden didn't need major hardscaping, so we focused on lush, sensory plant choices to complement the existing space and sourcing patio furniture for outdoor dinner parties.
Michaela wanted to feel more connected to her space, so she participated in removing the papyrus and the last vestiges of a destructive bougainvillea. Marissa taught Michaela about her new plant friends and how to mutually benefit as the garden grows with her and Graham's family.
After
Together, we leveled the green spaces and planted a luscious herb garden filled with salvias, rosemary, lavender, thyme, and a hibiscus personally significant to the couple. Zander and Marissa also helped them choose colorful Mediterranean patio furniture and hang dreamy string lights for entertaining. The result is an inspiring creative space for two theater producers and their storytelling community.
This garden is also designed with pets in mind. We filled in the patchy lawn with a mix of turf alternatives that will thrive in Los Angeles heat and drought, be safe for their curious dog to occasionally munch on, and withstand foot traffic during parties. The result is a sustainable meadow that all creatures can enjoy throughout the year.
